Jasmine Arthur
Play
I wanted to make a film that explores the reason why we make art in the first place. In the film Play, the main character experiences feelings that are commonly felt but not expressed. Inspired by TV shows and movies, she uses stop-motion animation as a way of refuge. Although it becomes a comforting outlet, it also costs more of her social life, isolating her more from her peers. She’s faced with an internal dilemma where she must decide between safety in solitude or vulnerability with sharing her art, and if it’s worth the price of connection.
This film is inspired by my own experiences in childhood, animation, comic books, were a shared language that could help me to connect with my peers. Animation and storytelling have been a passion of mine ever since.
The film’s playful rough 2D design for characters and objects paired with 3D hyper realistic backgrounds accentuates the feeling of unbelonging in an objective world. I aim to show how art can bridge the gap between others and put into words the feelings we may not be able to say.
