Being Caribbean

Being Caribbean sets out to change the current perception of life there. By highlighting uplifting stories that will share insight into life in the Caribbean. We also set out to provide people with opportunities they never had access to by providing scholarships, housing, and learning opportunities for Caribbean people in the US.

Every morning, you are woken up by the crowing of chickens but greeted nicely by a calming breeze from the fruit trees in your backyard, and noises from the insects at night make it hard to sleep. Growing up on clear beaches, I could see the fish playing and enjoying their little lives while I played tag with my friends every evening after school. People unfamiliar with Caribbean culture think this is the way we live 24/7.
Going beyond the surface, we are often affected by extreme hurricanes and volcanoes while at the same time battling many water shortages and frequent power outages due to poor infrastructure and sometimes corrupt governments. There is a lack of educational funding, leaving many schools unequipped to prepare children for the world while their parents lack the finances to send them to school. The after-effects cause many people to get involved in drugs and crime, many of these people my friends and family, and unfortunately, I’ve lost some of them to crime and drugs.
Being Caribbean sets out to change the current perception of life there. By highlighting uplifting stories that will share insight into life in the Caribbean. We also set out to provide people with opportunities they never had access to by providing scholarships, housing, and learning opportunities for Caribbean people in the US. So future generations can live a prosperous life, one better than their ancestors.
