Studiolab
Studiolab is a summer camp for teens to explore the intersection of science and art. Studiolab guides students as they prepare to make education and career decisions after high school, with the goal of inspiring an interdisciplinary career path.
Artist/Thesis Statement
I am an artist surrounded by scientists and tech gurus. My dad is a software engineer, my brother-in-law is an electrical engineer, my husband is a computer scientist, and my father-in-law is a biochemist.
As a result, I have noticed how well artists and scientists work together. I believe the best artists are scientists, and the best scientists are artists. Science and art work so well together that I am completely certain they cannot exist without each other.
I have also observed how isolated artists and scientists can be to their respective areas of interests. I cannot count the amount of times that I’ve heard non-artists tell me they “can’t even draw a stick fi gure!” As a graphic designer, I am no stranger to the number of design crimes a non-designer scientist can perform with a Canva account. On the flip side, many of my artist and designer friends are intimidated by science classes, and go out of their way to avoid STEM whenever possible.
This is where my idea for Studiolab was born: I wanted to bridge the gap between these two worlds, and inspire students to take a more interdisciplinary approach to their future careers. Studiolab would be a safe place to explore their academic interests, without the pressure of grades or perfection.
Most of all, it was going to be fun!
